A prisoner at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has won a court order blocking the U.S. government from transferring him to another country without first giving his lawyers a chance to challenge the move.

The federal court’s injunction, the latest in a series of similar rulings siding with detainees, means it will be harder for the United States to send 23-year-old Murat Kurnaz to another country, where he could be tortured or held indefinitely without charge, defense lawyer Baher Azmy said Thursday.

Kurnaz, born in Germany to Turkish parents, was in Pakistan when he was pulled off a bus by police, Azmy said. He has been at Guantanamo for three years.
